You're right, casual games are not anywhere close to the same as being and indie game. When I think of an indie game, I think of "hardcore" gamers. When it comes to casual game downloads I see a bored office worker or a stay at home mom.

"If PopCap goes and creates a hard-core wargame, it’s not going to sell, regardless of whether PopCap is "Indie" or not."
 Rehashing past arguments? :)

"In the film industry, there is a clutch of loyal ‘high-brow’ movie-goers who clamor for ‘Indie’ movies - winners of awards from Cannes and Sundance. But there’s been no evidence so far of any such interest in gaming."
I'll disagree there. While you wouldn't call war gamers 'high-brow' they are interested in a very specific genre which is only nowadays served by 'indie' developers and publishers. I think that is the way in which things will go, IMHO there are quite a few genres which the mainstream has pretty much ignored, and these are the ones that are ripe for indiedom.
I reckon that one could also describe indie films and music like this too. The mainstream just doesn't cater to such things such as character based dramas, documentaries, IDM, and indie pop.
