Game Biz : Cheaper Software
Posted by Phil Steinmeyer on 2005/2/14 20:02:37

A lot of the key software for game development is pretty pricey, $500+ stuff. As I've been rebuilding my software portfolio for personal use, I've taken advantage of upgrade savings. What's that?

(All prices are Amazon prices for new software)
Visual Studio 2003 Pro $699
Visual Studio 2003 Pro Upgrade $529
Upgrade savings = $170

Photoshop CS (i.e. version 8) $589
Photoshop CS Upgrade $161
Upgrade savings = $420

In both cases, I didn't have the predecessor software to qualify for the upgrade. But that's where E-bay comes in. While you will rarely find substantial E-Bay savings on brand new, legitimate latest-versions of things like Photoshop and Visual Studio, you CAN save on used packages that qualify you for the upgrade. For Visual Studio, I bought a $25 E-Bay copy of Visual Source Safe 5, and for Photoshop, I bought a bundle of Photoshop 6 with the upgrade CD for $275.

Total savings off new prices for the two, adding in the cost of buying the VS.NET upgrade, were ~$450, for about an extra hours worth of E-bay work. And yes, these were all very legitimate copies purchased (Hey, if buying legitimate copies is not a concern of yours, then you can pay $0 - what a deal!!!)

 Re: Cheaper Software
I sometimes buy the education versions of software. Ebayer say they require proof and they almost never do. In like 6 years of buying stuff that way, I had one guy asked. I faxed them a transcript of courses I was taking in the 80s and he took it.
Now I just wish getting Mac software was that easy. I've been buying a few apps here and there, getting ready to pick up a mac later this year but finding great deals on Mac software is much harder.

 Re: Cheaper Software
Microsoft gave out a bunch of free copies of 2002 to random companies a few years back. I got a hold of 2 of those copies. A year later on the Microsoft site they had an offer to upgrade 2002 to 2003 for $27. So I got 2 legit copies of 2003 for $54.
