Internet : Some names I DIDN'T choose.
Posted by Phil Steinmeyer on 2005/8/13 13:45:20

So 'New Crayon' is the name of my forthcoming games company (I may go with 'New Crayon Games', but people will probably shorten it mentally to 'New Crayon' anyways).

It's a solid name, but not a great one, IMO.  Not as strong as PopTop.  But the problem these days is that if you want to make a game company that will do substantial business on the 'net (i.e. many/most game companies), you need an available URL address with the .COM extension.  Use .INFO, or a bunch of dashes in your name, and no one will find your site.

It is extremely hard to find short, reasonably catchy names with an available .COM address.  Here's some that came out of my brainstorming, all with the .COM address taken.

For about 2/3 of these, there is no site at the address - still it's hard to find someone on the other side to quote you a price to buy it.  For the ones that will offer to sell, prices are pretty outrageous, ranging from $2,000 to $30,000 for names that I consider just marginal, at best (i.e. greengorilla.com was $2K, heartland.com was $30K, others were similar)

Oh, yes, I went through the same problem back when I first decided to go indie. It took me forever to come up with a name that I liked AND had an available URL. I finally decided on Viridian Games and bought the URL and some web space...and then got hired by a commercial game company, so my indie plans got put on hold. Right now, the site just holds my blog, which is at http://www.viridiangames.com/blog/ , but there's a chance I'll be starting my indie stuff back up in the near future.

LOL. Reminds me the time when I was choosing a name for my current project. My impression was: there's no word that has no website.
